Pokemon Go is working again in the PH

posted Jul 10, 2016, 9:01 PM by Jomar Maquinay

After the long wait (1 week is long for rabid Pokemon fans), Pokemons (lower right corner) / PokeStops (upper middle side) has started to appear again in the PH. It was available before during the soft launch, but was quickly pulled due to the overwhelming popularity (aka, Niantic's [the game developer] servers was DDoSe'd to oblivion).

Let's see how long it will last, since supporting millions of players (if not more) will be a challenge to Niantic. We, the old time Ingress players have experienced it before (Ingress beta days was laggy / full of bugs), and for sure we will experience it again on Pokemon Go. But nevertheless, kudos to Niantic / Nintendo for bringing it worldwide!

Avast - My Favourite AntiVirus

Avast is currently my favorite free antivirus software for Windows. Its light and contains lots of features. The software updater really help to keep your applications to the latest version :

Other parts of it maybe annoying (especially the built in Web Browser) but overall, its a wonderful, free anti virus. As an IT admin, its the AV I usually install on friends AND/OR client's computers.

Legacy Yahoo Messenger will stop working by August 5, 2016

Goodbye YM

Yahoo Messenger one of the most popular chat clients in the Philippines, will experience some major change. The legacy client (the one usually installed on almost all computer shops) will stop working by August 5, 2016. The web version (LINK), the Android (LINK) / iOS (LINK) and Yahoo Mail version (LINK) will still continue to work.

I remember YM fondly during the computer shop managing days, as a source of pain (config issues, web cam issues, source of viruses) and happiness (common way of chatting with loved ones). I guess its Yahoo's way of forcing users to adapt the web and mobile OS versions, to boost popularity. Especially now that the competition is fierce (Hangouts,  FB Messenger, Viber, etc).

OLX restores much coveted Trader Rating

Finally, after the endless request of its users, OLX has given in to its users's demand and re-implemented the Trader Rating, now called the Star Rating. Trading Rating is a very important feature of an Online Selling site, since it promotes buyers confidence and lessen the cases of online scams. OLX's Trader Rating is different than the one they had before. A few years ago, you just need to visit the seller's profile, put the Sulit (OLX's former name) link for the item you have bought, then set the rating (positive or negative) and press OK.

Now, you need to have the OLX app, talk to the seller through Chat, then rate him/her there after the transaction. The rating system is already live in the Android app, but the overall rating is not yet visible (as per FAQ page) :

My hunch is, OLX is starting to feel the slow drop in popularity and relevance that they needed to do something to boost popularity. Re-implementing the Trader Rating is a good step in the right direction.
